Award Winning Wines List - 0309

The Tonnellerie Marchive cooperage is situated in the province of Bordeaux between the vineyards of Medoc and Cognac, a short distance from the production center for the finest French oaks of Allier, Nevers and Troncais.

Since 1949, the year of our founding, we have maintained the art and tradition of the master French coopers. Our philosophy is to make barrels of the highest quality, meeting the most exacting requirements of winemakers and enologists.

Wood, Management and Air Drying

French oak or Quercus petrea

Marchive selects exclusively with the NFO (National Forestry Office) oaks of 100 - 130 years of age, with an average diameter of 60 cm (24” or two feet) which is optimum for making two barrels from one trunk. This slow growth oak provides the finest wood grain, preferred by winemaker’s world wide.

We can distinguish three broad types of grain selection according to geographic origins:

Allier and Nevers: Very fine grain
Bertrange, Jupilles and Vosges: Medium grain
Limousin: Open grain

Marchive guarantees oak tree management --- wood origin, as well as the barrel wood. Every barrel made is marked with an ID number.

The air drying process takes place in our yard, under optimum weather conditions and is aged up to 36 months.
